About this Cedar: As the west was settled, farmers and ranchers set fences to keep livestock in and protect crops. Because ordinary softwood, like pin or fir, would rot or soon become fodder for insects, these ranchers and farmers chose juniper wood... which we refer to as cedar because of its aromatic smell... from which to make their fence posts. Though knotty and tough to handle, the cedar would last for decades in the ground, withstanding insecs, water, and the weight of an occasional cow.
These old fence posts, however, are rapidly being replaced by steel. As the old posts are removed, their destiny is usually the fireplace or woodstove. We have been privileged to find a number of old posts and have shaped them into useful articles. Each post has a unique story to tell and is definitely quite old. As you handle and smell each piece, notice the bleaching from the sun and look for the telltale nail holes or rub marks and imagine the countless cattle and sheep that came and went, and how the west could not have been conquered without these posts.
